The school-age youth, hipsters, tourists and businessmen,... They all walk with a Kånken backpack now!
Fjällräven means polar fox in Swedish and is not at all evident to pronounce correctly. (For the record, it is "FEE-ahl rahven.")
The brand was founded in 1960 in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden. It became one of the fastest growing names in the field of outdoor and lifestyle.
In recent seasons, the Kånken bag has become increasingly popular. We see them appear more and more in the streets. With the same design from the 70s, this iconic piece has stood the test of time. The combination of bright colours and well-designed water-repellent material makes this by far one of the most practical backpacks. Perfect for everyday use, as a school bag or as a work bag. The Kanken is perfectly sized and has enough space and there is also a larger version that fits a laptop.
With a name that in Swedish means 'wearing', it is not surprising that the "Kånken" was designed for this purpose.
At the end of the seventies, statistics showed that almost eighty percent of the Swedish population had suffered from back pain at some point in their lives. Because the problems occurred at a younger age, the shoulder bags that were popular at the time were blamed. A backpack that distributed the weight evenly was considered a better idea.
The founder of Fjällräven, Åke Nordin, had followed the debate and decided to create an affordable and functional solution. For this he used A4 ring binders as the basis for the format. The Kånken backpack was born!By using two belts instead of just one, the weight of heavy textbooks is evenly distributed over both shoulders, meaning that the back is less burdened.
For Fjällräven everything comes down to functionality, trends are unimportant. That's why the Kånken backpack hasn't changed in design since its introduction in 1978. The backpack is still made of the same water-repellent Vinylon F fabric and has the same spacious main compartment. The only difference is the number of different colors in which they are now offered.
The size of the backpack seems to be one of the biggest secrets behind its success. The ability to fit everything you need into it, without being too large, is very often seen as a plus.
While the term 'classic' is used fairly loosely these days, the reliable 'Fjällräven Kånken' certainly deserves this title.
With a design that has remained the same since 1978, there is nothing to suggest that Kånken's popularity will soon decline. Check the street scene again in a few years, chances are there are still a lot of Kånken backpacks to be seen.
There are a lot of colors and sizes, so whatever you want to take with you...there is always a Kånken that suits you!

We have a weakness for unique shoes, you already knew that. It was a matter of time before we released our own collection. In May last year, we visited the factory of shoe manufacturer Ocra in Italy and the idea grew to design a small collection exclusively for our customers. Together with the factory, we looked for quality leather, a refined finish, and of course an excellent fit.
5 rules of thumb for a good children's shoe
1. A children's shoe must be of the right size in length, width and height. Also provide sufficient height for the toes.
2. The ideal children's shoe is closed at the back. It has a barely to impressable heel closure/contrefort as well as a good fit around the heel.
3. A child's shoe must bend in the right place: just at the level of the toes so that the foot can roll off normally. There must also be no torsion (twisting) in the longitudinal direction. In other words, you may not be able to swing the shoe out like a mop.
4. Children's shoes should preferably have an adjustable closure: laces or velcro. Button your laces, otherwise your shoe will fall off your foot and the foot will not be stable.
5. Does your child do sport? Make sure you have an adapted sports shoe: a running shoe for walking, a tennis shoe for playing tennis, a football shoe for playing football....
