These are questions we get very often and we will provide answers to them here.
Let's talk about those growing feet first. It is a fact that children's feet grow quite fast.
Sometimes it seems like one moment they are tiny and cute, and the next they seem to be bursting at the seams!
But how fast do they grow exactly? Well, it’s hard to give an exact timeline, because every child is unique of course. But in general, children’s feet grow fastest in the first few years of their lives, and by that we mean children between the ages of 0 and 3.
About every 4 months they will have the next size, children between the ages of 4 and 6 about every 6 months and after that they change on average every year.
A growth spurt may occur again around age 12. However, they can still have growth spurts during other stages of life.
A child's foot grows from size 18 to an average size 39 in 14 years. That is at least 21 sizes with an average of 1.5 sizes per year, but this does not always happen gradually.
Age growth rate by shoe size
0 - 3 years: 4 months
4 - 5 years: 6 months
6 - 7 years: 8 months
8 - 10 years: 10-12 months
11 - 13 years: 3-4 months
This is the average growth frequency. Of course, no child is standard and a growth spurt of 1 size in 2 months is also common.
Children do not often say that shoes are too small, as the nerve endings are not yet properly developed.
So check the size of the shoe regularly . If the shoe has a removable sole, you can place your child's foot on the sole and see if there is enough space (at least 6 mm between the big toe and the nose of the shoe) for the foot to roll off.
If in doubt, measure your child's feet again as discussed in our video, how do I measure feet.
And now, the big question: how do you know when those kids' shoes have become too small?
A good indication is when you notice your little one's toes pushing against the front of the shoe or if they complain of pain or discomfort while wearing them.
A baby will of course not tell you this, but you can sometimes see this on the toes themselves, for example if they come out of the shoe squeezed .
Another indication may be when you can no longer put the shoe on smoothly.
If the shoe has a removable insole , it is very convenient, you take it out and place your mini on it, standing upright.
This way you can see whether or not there is still some room for growth. If you see that the foot takes up the entire sole then it is time for that new pair.
Remember, it's all about comfort and the right fit. If the shoes are too small, it can hinder the growth and development of the feet and cause discomfort for your mini.
So there you have it! Those growing little feet are a mystery in themselves, but with regular measurements you can focus on comfort so that your little one has happy and healthy feet. This can be done very easily via our online sizing guide, where you can easily and quickly find the right shoe.
