Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Tips and advice regarding shoes.
Children learn best to walk barefoot. This strengthens the muscles and forces them to exert themselves. So let them hop around in their bare feet as much as possible.
Once they can walk independently and move around more, you should look for a sturdy shoe. After purchasing the first shoes, it is always advisable to alternate walking barefoot with wearing the shoes.
Is it too cold or does your child slip when pulling him upright? Then the pre-step shoes are the ideal solution. There they can further develop their foot muscles perfectly and they have protection around the foot.
Tip:
You can also purchase shoes without your child present!
How do you best work here? Place a piece of paper or cardboard on the floor against the wall and have your child stand on it with both feet. Make sure that your child is standing straight, with their heels against the wall and that both feet are straight. Then draw a line on the far toe of each foot. Measure the length from the heel (beginning of the blade) to the furthest extended toe (the stripe). You can bring the cut-out feet to the store and we can use this paper print to look for the right shoe in the right size.
We are happy to help you find the right size! If you cannot get to the store, enter the cm of the longest foot via our size helper and you will receive the right choices for your child.
Children's shoes are too small if there is no room left for growth. You can press on the toe of the shoes to see if there is still room for growth (pull the heel completely back). There must always be space available. A few millimeters are minimal.
If you have any doubts, feel free to drop by or measure your feet on a sheet of paper.
There are several signals:
- Sometimes children no longer want to put on the shoes. You really have to squeeze to put them on or they want to take them off right away.
- Small red spots appear on the heel or toe.
- Torn or curled toenails can be an indication of shoes that are too tight.
Tip: if the shoe has a loose insole, you can remove the sole from the shoe and let your child stand on the soles. When the sole is completely filled, you need new shoes.
The feet of children between one and three years old grow one shoe size every 3 to 4 months.
The feet of four and five year olds grow one shoe size every six months.
Children between six and seven years old need a larger shoe size every 8 to 10 months.
From the age of eight to ten, children keep the same shoe size for about a year.
Around the start of puberty (around 12-13 years old) the growth process can suddenly take a spurt. Therefore, check the size of your teenagers every three months.
1. Make sure the shoes fit properly. Children's shoes fit well if your child walks comfortably in them and there is 1 centimeter of room for growth in the length.
When you buy new children's shoes, always provide extra room for growth. Do not buy shoes 'as they grow': a shoe that is too big can be just as harmful as a shoe that is too small. Shoes that are too large do not support the feet properly and are bad for your child's posture. In addition, the shoe wears out much faster due to friction.
2. Always try on left and right shoes. When trying on, pay attention not only to the length of a shoe, but also to the width (for children with narrow/wide feet), the height (for children with a high instep). Let the child walk around with both shoes on and see how the shoes fit the foot. If the walking pattern is similar to walking barefoot, then the shoe is good.
3. Natural materials such as leather are preferred.
- The three advantages of leather shoes:
These are the highest quality shoes, they absorb sweat more easily and ensure that children are less likely to get sweaty feet.
Leather shoes can easily adapt to the shape of the feet. This allows the feet to retain their natural shape easily and without problems.
Leather shoes retain their sturdy shape for longer, which is necessary to support the (child's) foot.
- Children's shoes should have good, flexible soles. For smaller feet, the soles may still be very flexible. We are then in the phase between crawling and walking. From the first steps, the sole must be particularly flexible at the toes; a nice roll-off of 20° is optimal.
- Provide at least two pairs of shoes so that the child can change shoes every day. This prevents sweaty feet and gives the shoe some time to ventilate.
- Don't pass older children's shoes on to little ones. They are often worn in too much and are shaped to the foot.
The size of each individual shoe is noted on the site: fits true to size/fits small/fits large/fits 1 size larger/fits 1 size smaller.
Every shoe is different, so the fit of shoes differs per brand. For example, your son or daughter may generally have size 31, but for one brand you need size 30, while for the other brand you need size 32. To help you choose the right size, we have measured all internal dimensions of our range for you. This way, using our size guide, you will receive the right shoe for the cm you entered.

For the ideal growth margin, the child's age stage is important to us. In toddlers and preschoolers, we foresee 1.5 to 2 cm growth margin (April).
It is possible to purchase children's shoes second-hand. This can be a cost-effective and environmentally friendly choice.
A few tips:
1. Check the condition of the shoe.
Examine the wear, such as cracks or scuffs on the sole.
Check that they are clean and free of odors.
2. Pay attention to the fit.
It is crucial that the shoes fit properly based on the shape of the feet. A shoe with a wide fit for a narrow foot is a no-go.
3. Quality and durability.
Choose high-quality shoes that are known for their durability, such as brands that we distribute. This is mainly because children are active and use shoes intensively.
4. Sources of purchase.
Buy second-hand shoes from reliable stores or online platforms that verify the condition of their products.
5. Shape and strength of the shoe.
Make sure that the shoe has retained its original shape and strength of the sole and heel.
Otherwise they will no longer provide the support that children's feet need.
6. Age of the shoes.
Be careful with shoes that have not been used for a long time. Soles also deteriorate if they have been left in the closet for years.
Our winter and summer sneakers mainly differ from each other in color and design , but not so much in the use of materials, namely leather.
Colour:
The colors of summer sneakers are often brighter and more vibrant, which matches summer clothing styles.
Winter sneakers are generally available in darker or neutral colors.
Material:
In winter, leather provides good insulation. If properly maintained and maintained, they also provide sufficient protection against rain or snow. Furthermore, it keeps the heat inside.
In summer, the leather provides ventilation. Because leather is a natural material that breathes, which helps to keep your feet feeling and dry.
This is essential for children because they sweat mainly on their feet.
Leather ensures that there are no sweaty feet.
Shoe care.
It is very important that you impregnate your new shoes before wearing them.
By spraying the shoes with an impregnation spray ("Collonil: Carbon pro spray"), you make them water and dirt repellent, protecting them against influences such as rain, snow, puddles, etc. Although leather is naturally waterproof, it must it must be cared for to maintain its protective effect. If the shoes are worn a lot, it is best to repeat this regularly (for example every month). Especially in winter, it is important to keep your shoes water and dirt-repellent. The maintenance of your shoe depends on the type of leather of your shoe. We have also created a page to guide you in this.
Useful tips! Always make sure that the shoes are dry and clean before spraying them with an impregnating spray. Otherwise it can cause stains or color differences. Never place your shoes under a heater to prevent the leather from drying out and shrinking.
Leather is a natural product that is breathable, comfortable and strong. Moreover, it lasts a lot longer than shoes made of other materials.
Leather also requires good care to retain all these properties.
Leather can dry out and become stiffer over time. Therefore, polish your shoes regularly. If your shoes are completely clean and dry, you can rub them with a colorless neutral shoe polish.
The shoe polish will nourish the shoes so that they no longer dry out and remain flexible.
Let the shoe polish soak in for fifteen minutes and then polish the shoes with a dry cloth.
Then spray the shoes with a water and dirt-repellent impregnation spray.
Attention!
It is better not to polish smooth leather shoes that are still wet. The shoe cream mixes with the water and dries more slowly.
In principle, patent leather shoes do not require impregnation. The leather has a closed lacquer layer that prevents moisture from penetrating.
Patent leather shoes have a nice shine. But after wearing them for a while, the shine may fade and streaks or cracks may begin to appear.
To avoid cracks and glass reduction, first polish your shoes thoroughly with soapy water and a sponge. You can then apply vegetable oil or the Collonil "Lack mousse for patent leather shoes" to your shoes.
The Collonil "Lack mousse for patent leather shoes" protects, cares for and cleans smooth patent leather and fashionable wrinkled lacquer.
This way your patent leather shoes will retain their high level of glamor!
Suede and nubuck are beautiful materials, provided you maintain them properly!
Yet not everyone is enthusiastic about the combination of "children's shoe and suede/nubuck", but these materials have a very positive property: you are much less likely to see scratches on them than on smooth leather!
Both suede and nubuck are types of leather in which the skin of an animal has been 'tanned'.
Suede is the inside of the leather and has a hairy appearance. Suede is softer than regular leather, but it is sensitive to water and dirt.
Nubuck is also a raw leather, but unlike suede, the top of the skin is lightly sanded, giving it a finer, velvety appearance. Nubuck is also thicker, but has finer fibers than suede. We use nubuck the most on children's shoes because we find it a lot sturdier.
If there are no real stains on the shoes and you just want to give your shoes some maintenance, proceed as follows:
Suede or nubuck have soft hairs that are best cleaned with a brush. Use the suede pad to wipe away dust and dirt on your shoes. Do not move the block back and forth, but always move in the same direction. Once you have wiped off this layer of dirt, your shoes will look newer anyway.
You can then spray them with a water and dirt-repellent impregnation spray to further protect them. Impregnate the suede shoes regularly to keep them beautiful.
If there are stains on the shoes, proceed as follows:
Wear spots that you can no longer brush out can sometimes be repaired with an eraser/cleaner. We have special suede/nubuck cleaners (Collonil) for this job. Start with moderate pressure on the eraser and increase if the scuffs do not go away.
You can then spray them again with a water and dirt-repellent impregnation spray to further protect them. Impregnate the suede shoes regularly to keep them beautiful.
Be sure not to use shoe polish because it will harden the suede fabric and could cause stains! To nourish them, we have a separate cream for this type of leather, also from the Collonil brand.
Tip:
Did the kids play in the mud with their suede or nubuck shoes?
Just let mud dry. Remove excess mud without wiping too hard across the suede. Let it dry. Once it's dry, you can easily break off the large pieces. Use a suede pad to brush off any remaining bits.
Like smooth leather, greased leather is made from the outside of the animal skin. This type of leather feels smooth and a bit greasy and usually looks dull. You can easily recognize greased leather if you press the leather outwards from the inside of the shoe with your finger - you will immediately see the leather lighten in color and you can often wipe away minor scratches.
Greased leather is beautiful, but it does discolour the more it is worn. We don't think this is a disadvantage, but rather a nice thing about a leather shoe.
Scratches are also more common on greased leather than on other types of leather, but don't worry, it can be easily treated.
Grease your shoes several times a year with a colorless cream. This ensures that the leather retains its deep color shine.
Also spray the leather once a month against dirt and moisture. This is best done with "Collinil: Rustical for oily leathers".
Useful tips:
Never use regular impregnating sprays or shoe cream. These can damage the greased leather character of the shoes.
Applying leather grease too often or too thickly is not good. This causes the leather to become too flexible and lose its shape retention.
Metallic leather is special leather, because a special coating has been applied over the normal top layer. This gives the leather its shiny effect. This layer will not wear out quickly, but is sensitive to scratches.
If your metallic shoes have become dirty, this is usually easy to remove, because the coating prevents the dirt from penetrating into the leather. To ensure that your metallic shoes become dirty less quickly and to ensure that they continue to shine beautifully, a special spray has been developed by Collonil: Metallic spray for metallic leather.
If you regularly spray your shoes with this spray, your shoes will retain their shine. You don't have to rub the shoes afterwards, but you can if you want to make them extra shiny!
Ponyhair is an exciting alternative to 'normal' leather.
These furry shoes aren't really made of pony hair. The material, like other leather products, comes from the cow. The reason it is called pony hair is because it is just as cuddly as pony hair.
The material seems very difficult to care for, but it is not that bad. It's actually very easy! These shoes are easy to clean with a dry cloth. You can use a slightly damp cloth if necessary, but then dry the shoes immediately afterwards with a dry cloth.
Furthermore, you should spray your shoes against the grain. This way, every hair is captured and you can enjoy your shoes for longer.
Impregnate your shoes regularly to keep them nice and 'new'. You can do this with a special spray for pony hair "Collonil: Vario spray for beastly shoes" or with the "Collonil: Carbon pro spray".
